It is extremely simple in design, with no clothes or ornamentation of any kind. At the same time, the casting is very fine, with the face very sensitively modeled, with what appears to be betel nut or tobacco or some other substance stuffed in one cheek, and he may have small fangs inside his mouth. Great face!! . I’ve been attributing this sculpture for some time as 11th to 13th century, but the more I examine it, the more my instincts tell me that it may be much earlier. As with most early pieces, it is solid-cast. The simplicity in design and ornamentation, along with quality casting, thr ancient patina, also suggest a possible extremely early (i.e.6-9thC) dating.7566.
