The Manhattan cube is a deceptively simple side table, created by artist-designer Margit Wittig that can double up as a sculptural seat.
It replicates a shape which Margit is fond of and has previously used in lighting on a smaller scale, a slightly imperfect cuboid.
‘The designing of the new side table felt like a natural progression in my range of
products. An aesthetically pleasing and functional table, using concepts and materials from my other products, I came up with creating this simple design to serve as an occasional table that can additionally serve as seating when one is entertaining. My signature can be seen in this intricately crafted design and its applied texture.’
Margit starts by building a clay model on 1:1 scale and once the overall shape is
finished, the texture with pieces of bark from a tree and rough textured stones gets applied. Choosing the material to cast in depends on the functionality of the object. This occasional table or seat is made in resin so it is light enough to be easily moved around yet strong to sit on. Resin has both qualities.
The result is a beautifully tactile cuboid that can be seen as an art piece yet has a clever duality of purpose.
Working from her studio in London, Margit takes commissions for her individual tables
and creates bespoke contemporary lighting and furniture working in limited editions for collectors worldwide.
Suitable for outdoor use or wet rooms.
