Offered for your consideration, this fine period Sheraton chest in mahogany with select figured mahogany veneers. A possible attribution could be assigned to Moses Mullen who operated a shop in Cambridge, MA in the 1820’s since a nearly identical signed piece exists. Curiously, the surname “Bemis” is written in chalk inside the top drawer. The Bemis family were prominent residents of nearby Watertown MA and this serves and another possible clue to the provenance.
Typical of the Boston school, this handsome chest features the bow front and rope turned columns topped with “cookie” corners, and, unlike the signed piece, retains its original backsplash that is accented with brass rosettes .
