Bamum Decorative Wooden Ancestor Figure embroidered with European Glass Beads, Grasslands People , Cameroon
Private collection Brussels
These commemorative statuettes ,representing ancestors ,were initially carved in wood to be then covered with a fabric and embroidered with imported multi-coloured pearls. The iconography displays the distinctive expressiveness from the Grassland regions. Among the Grasslands People, as in other ethnic groups, art objects reflected their owner’s place in society. Thus, the materials and forms of the objects varied according to social status. The art styles of the peoples in the Grasslands (Bamileke, Bamum and Tikar)are very hard to differentiate due to the complex migration and exchange patterns that are typical of the region.
