This exquisite antique parquetry writing box or lap desk is unsigned, but presumed to have been made in Canada in approximately 1900 in a Folk Art style. The box itself, including the interior is completely and masterfully handcrafted and a raised casket shaped top and finished on the bottom with a serpentine skirt. The entire outside in decorated with very tightly constructed parquetry in geometric patterns and borders and accented with various sizes of circles. The inside has both a drop down compartment on the royal blue lined top, and a lift up compartment on the bottom which is also lined. The front compartment or pen rest tilts to open and originally there would have been two ink bottles on either side. Only one has survived and the key to the front lock is missing.
