Carved from a single piece of wood, this stool from the Bamileke in the Cameroon, features at its centre three carved leopards with circular scorched decorations, representing their spots. The seat of the stool exhibits a lovely rippled surface, and throughout, the stool has developed a glossy and worn patina.
Such stools were sat upon by higher ranking dignitaries in Bamileke society, in which the leopard was the symbol of power and wisdom.
