A Fante Drum Attendant standing male figure with flaring skirt and one arm out front. Bright open eye expression. From Ghana, early 20th century. As a display during traditional drumming performances and ceremonies in Ghana, carved wood figures are placed near or in front of the drum ensemble. This figure is a male (genitals visible under skirt) posed with his right arm extended and his right flexed in a typical gesture of an Akan dancer. He wears a flaring fiber skirt, a type that is still worn by traditional Akan dancers today.
The Akan are a large population in Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast), the main groups are the Ashanti (var. Asante) and the Fanti (var. Fante). The shape of the head and cubist style suggest this is Fanti Akan.
Wood with white and black pigments. Created in the early to middle part of the 20th century.
Provenance: Dimondstein Tribal Art, Los Angeles.
The figure measures 20 1/2 x 8 1/2 12 inches. With a custom painted steel mount that raises it to a height of 20 3/4 inches.
In good condition, appropriate for its age, mediums, and origin. Large crack on torso, chips on right hand, losses here and there.
